Outdoor programs to support your body to heal within a reciprocal relationship with the natural world

A tree thrives in a forest.

Science has shown the intricate interplay of fungi systems that create a powerful underground network that communicates to all trees in the forest (Simard).  These networks signal upcoming dangers, and share nutrients.  In addition, insects, water, plants, the list could go on, all support the livelihood of the trees.

Take the tree out of the forest, and, the tree loses its support.  The tree is displaced from its ecosystem and struggles to survive on its own.

“There are no individuals.  There aren’t separate species.  Everything in the forest is the forest.” (Powers)

We have also been displaced and are struggling on our own.

Just like trees, we need an intricate system connecting us to, not only each other, but, the nonhuman world so we can all thrive.  Yet,  we expect to walk into a therapy session, separated from others, and earth, and expect lasting changes. This is exactly why Wellness in the Woods was created…

Why Wellness in the Woods?

In my years as a psychotherapist, sitting across from people in pain, common themes of suffering and beliefs emerged, yet, many exclaimed they must be the only one that feels and thinks like this.  Instantly, images of others sitting on the exact couch would come to my mind who said the same thing, yet they had no idea.

I was quick to realize individual therapy has potential to continue the experience of isolation, and instead, I want to foster an experience of interconnectedness.

I knew I had to take therapy outside the four walls and into group experiences within the natural world so we can have opportunity to re-discover our bodies as intricate systems within a greater ecosystem.

Wellness in the Woods offers an array of seasonal workshops, groups, and retreats.  They may include mindful walking in the forest, getting our feet wet in the creek, hanging out with a tree, and sharing our experiences around a fire.

But, it doesn’t stop there!

These programs aim to facilitate the essential reciprocal relationship to the earth.  To engage in earth’s healing, programs will partner with restoration projects so you can get your hands dirty as you give back to the earth.

I continually am amazed what can happen when we are surrounded by the natural world with a safe group of people. Nature becomes the teacher and opens us up to new levels of connection that supports us to let go of old fears and beliefs and enter into deeper authentic relationship to self, others, and the natural world.

Past participants have reflected that participating in an outdoor group on top of individual therapy, was a vital part to their healing journey as they could practice what they were learning in individual therapy within a safe group atmosphere, and, knew they were making a difference for the health of the earth.
